Radio hihi: a slice of hihi for curious minds

Radio interview available from the Radio New Zealand National at:

Hugh Robertson from the Department of Conservation and author of the Field Guide to Birds of New Zealand is interviewed by Simon Morton on the This Way Up show, Radio New Zealand National.

In this interview Hugh and Simon are visiting Zealandia in Wellington and talking everything hihi. Hugh provides a nice introduction to hihi ecology and what hihi look and sound like – with help from some calling males in the background. Zealandia is celebrating 10 years since hihi were successfully reintroduced and it’s a good setting to learn about their past declines and the conservation challenges faced by this most colourful of New Zealand birds.

My involvement with Hihi research began in 1994 and I have been a regular contributor to the recovery group since 2002. I have worked at, or assisted with, most of the current and some of the past Hihi populations through research projects, habitat assessments, assisting with translocations, contracting as a site manager and volunteering. In 2005/06 I completed a Masters project looking at the effects of habitat on breeding success on Little Barrier, Kapiti, Tiritiri Matangi and Mokoia Islands.
